Shia and Sunni Muslims of Basra, south of Iraq, held a joint Friday prayer on January 8 in a show of solidarity against the insult to Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Al-Sistani by Saudi Mufti Mohammad Al-Arifi.

According to Basra news agency, the worshippers, among whom were a number of Iraqi intellectuals, scholars and local officials, held the congregational prayer at Al-Shaheed Taha Mosque in Basra.

Abdul Wahhab Khalid Al-Mulla, head of Sunni scholars of southern Iraq, led the prayers. He condemned the Mufti’s statements in his sermons, stressing the importance of Islamic unity.

Al-Arifi made insulting remarks against the grand Shia source of emulation on January 1 in his Friday prayer sermons delivered at Al-Bowardi Mosque in Riyadh.
